Macdonald Compleat Angler Overlooking the Thames at Marlow

The elegant Macdonald Compleat Angler is beautifully located overlooking the River Thames at Marlow Bridge, Buckinghamshire. A four AA Red Star hotel, it enjoys an enviable reputation for exceptional cuisine and wines, stylish accommodation and high quality banqueting facilities.

Dating back to the 17th century, the smart hotel takes its name from Isaak Walton’s world-famous book on angling. It’s now a peaceful haven perfectly placed for fishing, boating and walking as well as boutique shopping and exploring royal history in nearby Windsor and Henley.

Riverside Restaurants and lawn

Macdonald Compleat Angler has two award winning riverside restaurants and a lawn leading down to the Thames open every summer weekend for drinks and summer dining al fresco.

Bowater’s is named after the owners of the hotel for almost fifty years, Sir Ian and Lady Bowater. The elegant restaurant, which has been awarded two rosettes from the AA, offers modern British for lunch and dinner with outside dining on the terrace when the sun shines. Relaxed and informal by day and candlelit by night, it has fantastic views of Marlow Bridge and across the river to the parish church on the opposite bank, which is romantically lit every evening. Bowaters is open every day for lunch and dinner except for dinner on Sunday.

For guests preferring to fine dine, the hotel’s second restaurant, Aubergine, has three AA rosettes and is a successor to the original Michelin-starred Aubergine Restaurant in Chelsea, London. The Executive Chef demonstrates his passion and understanding of modern European cuisine, in a relaxed setting overlooking Marlow Weir, with a varied and exciting menu featuring seasonal British produce.

For most of us afternoon tea is an occasional luxury, but it’s still a tradition at the Compleat Angler, where you can enjoy the delicate sandwiches, scones and pastries either on the lawn or riverside terrace during warmer days or inside at other times.

Messing about on the River

Whether you simply want to watch the world float by as you sip a refreshing Pimm’s or glass of bubbly, or indulge in the hotel’s lunch menu, the riverside lawn is a great place to relax with friends and family as you soak up the convivial atmosphere.

The hotel also has two boats which can be chartered for a gentle river cruise from its private mooring on the lawn river frontage. Silent Waters, a 21ft Edwardian style launch, has space for six guests while the larger, fully skippered Sovereign can host twelve. Perfect for entertaining or simply relaxing, the Compleat Angler’s special ‘Food on the River’ can be pre-ordered for lunch or afternoon tea. Menus include canapés, sandwiches, cream teas, strawberries and cream or a picnic platter.

Stylish Rooms

The hotel has 64 stylish rooms including three suites, most with lovely river views and some within the pleasing sight and sound of cascading water over Marlow Weir. All are ensuite and no two are the same; décor is chic and contemporary while maintaining a high level of comfort. Flexible configuration offers doubles, twins, singles and family rooms while six rooms have four-poster beds for an extra dimension of glamour. Wi-Fi is also available in the rooms and throughout the hotel.

Weddings and Private Functions

Romantically set on one of the loveliest stretches of the River Thames, the elegant hotel is also a perfect setting for magical weddings and private functions. It makes a stunning reception venue and is licensed for civil ceremonies in three rooms, or the bridal couple can also tie the knot in the beautiful church on the opposite river bank.

The hotel’s banqueting suite offers a flexible combination of four versatile rooms decorated in regency style able to accommodate up to 120 guests. With its panoramic windows, the Terrace has stunning watery views across the hotel’s lush green lawn to the river; combine this with the gentle tones of a harpist, or pianist and you have the perfect place for champagne cocktails.

The Macdonald Compleat Angler with its timeless tranquillity is also an excellent choice for autumn weddings and private functions; guests can admire the ever changing river views from the warm and cosy interior and sip hot mulled wine by a crackling open fire. And as the festive season approaches, they have the added bonus of beautiful greenery, twinkling fairy lights and a huge Christmas tree. The hotel has been hosting wonderful events all year round for literally hundreds of years, a fine tradition which is continued to this day.
