Feed the soil

Now is the time to make sure that your soil is full of life for the forthcoming year. Spread a good layer of compost or well-rotted horse manure onto beds and vegetable areas. It will help suppress weeds and slowly become incorporated into the soil, adding nutrients and retaining moisture.

Protect your pond

Keep a small area of your pond ice-free by floating a rubber ball on the surface of the water. This will benefit fish and wildlife by allowing the water to remain oxygenated and enabling other gases including carbon dioxide and methane escape. Formal concrete or brick ponds will also escape damage as the ball absorbs the pressure of the expanding ice.
