Archant

Fill your diary this month with a whole host of events and outings in Buckinghamshire.

The country’s showcase

If you’ve always wanted to try country sports then the CLA Game Fair is your chance to have a go.

The three-day show is being held at the magnificent 11,500-acre Blenheim Palace estate in Oxfordshire from Friday, 18 July to Sunday, 20 July. The CLA Game Fair is the Country Land & Business Association’s flagship event – it is the leading, most extraordinary, outdoor country show and is widely accepted as the world’s greatest celebration of country life and sports.

The list of have-a-go activities is endless, visitors can try flyfishing, simulated horse riding, falconry, archery, airgunning and clay shooting. For amateur gundog owners, there is even the chance to put the family pet to the test.

The CLA Game Fair is renowned for its shopping opportunities and this year there will be around 900 exhibitors selling everything from country clothing, antiques, art, furniture, dog and horse accessories, fishing tackle and products from the finest gun makers. If you’ve found you’ve bought too much to carry, the handy Shop and Drop point means you’ll be able to leave your purchases safely whilst you suss out more bargains.

This year’s enhanced Totally Food Show will include daily cookery demonstrations by renowned TV chefs Mike Robinson and Valentine Warner.

Under-16s accompanied by adults can visit the three-day show for free this year.

Giving opera some leather

To say that Jeff Clarke’s updated version of 19th century Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti’s The Daughter of the Regiment is a little different, is something of an understatement.

Here the story of an abandoned baby raised in unusual circumstances is sung in English, and instead of Tyrolean mountains and noble soldiers in gaudy uniforms we have a Californian biker gang. They may be mad and bad, but they still look after the tiny girl they find in their camp one night.

Opera della Luna will bring the extraordinary story to life on stage at Stowe School’s Roxburgh Theatre on Friday, 25 July and Sunday, 27 July. Book via www.stowe.co.uk/news-and-events/arts-at-stowe/drama.
