Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup on on Saturday 9 August
A special preview evening at The Winning Post, Winkfield, included a ‘Who’s Who’ guest panel giving their thoughts on the runners and riders ahead of Saturday’s premier international jockey competition at Ascot.
Berkshire & Buckinghamshire Life editor Jan Raycroft was delighted to join local residents having their cards marked for potential winners by some notable experts. (We reckon The Girls have a great chance!)
Hosted by Channel 4 and Racing UK presenter, Rishi Persad, the event welcomed the Queen’s racehorse trainer, Andrew Balding, leading Canadian female jockey, Emma-Jayne Wilson, fellow jockey Steffi Hofer, and Ascot’s Nick Smith.
As well as a panel discussion, guests were also treated to a three-course menu of local and seasonal produce from The Winning Post’s head chef, Simon Lawrence, which included: seared sashimi tuna, oriental salad and wasabi dressing; medallions of beef fillet, garlic butter poached lobster, sauté new potatoes and truffled leeks; and English strawberry soufflé with hot strawberry coulis.
The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is a unique event in the racing calendar where four teams of top jockeys representing Great Britain & Ireland, the Rest of the World, Europe and The Girls team each battle it out in a six-race showdown. This year Franki Dettori will captain the European team while Tom Queally will lead the Great Britain & Ireland side. A sell-out crowd is expected tomorrow when race goers will also be treated to a post-race concert featuring crowd favourites such as Bjorn Again, Scouting for Girls, B*Witched and Chesney Hawkes.
Speaking about the evening, Channel 4 and Racing UK presenter Rishi Persad, said: “Andrew [Balding] is clearly quietly confident, especially with Debdebdeb. In complete contrast is Emma-Jayne, who’s positively bullish about her prospects.”
The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is the perfect showcase for anyone who hasn’t been racing before or is a relative newcomer to the sport. The atmosphere is relaxed, it’s easy to follow and it’s being staged at Ascot, the best racecourse in the world.”
