Welcome to an exclusive photo session with Windsor’s most famous cat – and he slept right through it, reports Maureen McLean

All kinds of assignments come our way, and it was while editor Jan Raycroft was chatting with Windsor Rotarian Mike Brown from the Windsor & Eton Town Partnership at The Boatman’s launch party that this opportunity arrived.

You see, we like to think we know just about everyone in local society. “Have you met Dexter?” said Mike and we had to respond with blank faces, although I’d heard about this feline celebrity and once thought I’d bumped into him.

Mike told us: “I’ve not met a shop assistant in Peascod Street yet who doesn’t know him. If you go into any shop and ask, ‘Do you know Dexter?’ invariably the reply will be ‘Yes. The famous Windsor cat.’

“He loves a bit of shopping, you might find him in White Stuff, Moda in Pelle, Hotter Shoes, Snappy Snaps, Boots, Waterstones, the Helen and Douglas House shop, Metro Bank, Barclays Bank, Nationwide, Tattoo Shop or The Bel and The Dragon.”

To digress for a moment, while out in the town earlier in the year I spotted a lovely ginger cat outside T K Maxx opposite the Guildhall. Worried about him being lost, I took to Twitter to do some research. It turned out that this cat is called Oliver. He too likes a bit of window shopping, but has not yet reached the celebrity status of Dexter on Facebook and Twitter.

So I set off to find this Silver Bengal Persian Cross, starting with where sightings of his adventures are recorded by fans and the page has close to 2,700 ‘likes’. There’s even a photo of him looking ready to scale the wall of Windsor Castle and one of him stalking some pigeons on the grass outside Windsor Castle… he had better look out, there’s corgis on patrol in there lad!

Having done the online investigation it was time to head for Windsor town centre – and there was Dexter, enjoying a snooze in White Stuff, Peascod Street, my very first port of call. On that particular day Green & Blacks chocolate were present for a promotional visit so I just couldn’t resist a photo of him in the White Stuff window with some of their white chocolate!

It turns out he’s a regular part of window displays in the town (thank you White Stuff for allowing me to photograph your celebrity guest) and loves the shops because of all the empty boxes around to curl up in. Fans are proud of their ‘paw-o-graphs’.

Dexter lives with marketing professional Kirsty Jarvis and her family but his busy social life schedule means he’s often outside his chosen shop door or restaurant from early morning, waiting for opening hours.
