Autumn has to be the best time of year for the walker, when the weather's not too hot, nor too cold and the trees are changing from green to glorious golds and reds. Here are some of my favourite rambles that give you spectacular views of autumn colours en route. What's more you'll always be close to a pub, so you can work up an appetite and not feel too guilty about enjoying a hearty meal and a pint afterwards. Happy rambling!



1 Lower Assendon on the B480 near Henley.
Start/finish: The Golden Ball.
Distance: Three and three-quarter miles.

2 Pangbourne north-west of Reading, just north of the M4.
Start/finish: Fee-paying car park near Pangbourne station.
Distance: Four and a half miles.

3 Great Kimble - on the A4010 near Princes Risborough.

4 Wargrave - on the A321 between Reading and Maidenhead.

5 Christmas Common - near Watlington

6 Inkpen - in the countryside to the south of the A4 between Newbury and Hungerford
Start/finish: The Crown and Garter, Inkpen.

7 Aldworth - on the B4009 Newbury to Streatley road.
