Griff Rhys Jones greeted Civic Societies from across the south to Reading for the Spring Network Event. Reading Civic Society were proud to host around 70 delegates, from societies as far afield as Bristol, Peterborough, Brighton and Tunbridge Wells, and also other societies from Berkshire to Reading Town Hall.
The societies share ideas and work on issues members believe to be the most important to strengthen civic societies. Presentations and discussions focused on the Localism Bill and Neighbourhood Planning.
Griff Rhys Jones, President of Civic Voice, spoke about the ways in which everyone can become involved in making their neighbourhood a better place and in emphasising its individuality and character, with diverse examples both from his recent Greatest Cities of the World programmes and from the area in London in which he lives. Societies were also encouraged to develop their plans for Civic Day, which will be held on Saturday, June 25. The event in the Victoria Hall preceded lunch in the Waterhouse Chamber, during which Griff Rhys Jones chatted with society members. See www.civicvoice.org.uk for more details.
