2nd Kennet Vale Rainbow Unit is a group of delightful, enthusiastic little girls who enjoyed a fun Wednesday evening making Banana Splits with as many Fairtrade ingredients as could be found in Thatcham. They used Fairtrade bananas from the Windward Isles but unfortunately, Fairtrade vanilla ice cream could not be bought anywhere locally. The girls talked about what this would probably mean for the farmers who had grown the sugar and vanilla pods which had been used in making the ice cream. They understood that the farmers may not have received a fair wage for their labours and so their families might not have had sufficient to eat or schooling and good clothing for their children or medical help when they were ill. The Banana Splits were topped off with Maltesers which will be made using Fairtrade cocoa beans in 2012. The girls will be looking for the Fairtrade Foundation logo when it appears on the side of the packets in the not too distant future!
