The Oracle Reading
Opened in 1999, The Oracle is the Thames Valley’s premier shopping destination, home to around 90 retail units from chic boutiques to major department stores including Debenhams and House of Fraser. Major brands including Hollister, Reiss, Zara, Hobbs and Apple make the centre a must-visit for anyone searching for the latest high-street trends, from everyday outfits to something for every special occasion.
Once you’ve had your fill of shopping, head for one of The Oracle’s wide range of cafés and restaurants catering for every taste, including Jamie’s Italian, Browns Bar and Brasserie on The Riverside and the newly opened Ed’s Easy Diner in-centre. The stunning setting alongside the River Kennet offers the opportunity for alfresco dining during the summer months, as well as being the location for a ten screen Vue cinema to turn a shopping trip into a full day out.
Visitors can also take advantage of a regular series of exciting events, from fashion shows to fireworks, held both on The Riverside and in the malls. The Oracle’s charitable partners also hold regular events at the centre - the Alzheimer’s Society, the Thames Valley & Chiltern Air Ambulance and child bereavement organisation Daisy’s Dream are all being supported by The Oracle and its shoppers this year.
With The Oracle having a well-deserved reputation as the fashion hub of the Thames Valley, we asked them for their top tips for dressing for special occasions this summer...
The summer season is well on its way, bringing with it a host of important occasions that call for a stylish new look. Whether you’re looking for a perfect outfit for a sunny summer wedding, mingling with the crowds by the river at the Henley Regatta or hoping for some luck at a day at the races, The Oracle has the perfect pick of suits, dresses, shoes and accessories – and of course, that all important eye-catching headwear.
Take your pick of patterns for this season’s occasion wear, with prints of all shapes, sizes and colours splashed across dresses suitable for any occasion. If you like your prints bright and bold, nothing says summer like a classic floral print. Add a further pop of colour with accessories that bring out a key shade in the main print and top off your look with a quirky fascinator for extra impact.
An alternative to this season’s prints comes in the form of on-trend pastel shades – pretty, feminine and perfect for a summer wedding. Mix soft ice-cream shades on dresses and accessories such as hats and a dainty clutch bag just big enough for all the essentials, from confetti to betting slips.
A pair of stand-out heels and statement jewellery all contribute to a dazzling summer look – opt for wedges for summer weddings and events where heels and grass could make for a tricky fashion situation!
When it comes to summer dressing, men can beat the heat by opting for a tailored suit in cool, chic grey, paired with shirts and ties in shades of blue to match the summer sky. A classic pair of brown brogues is the perfect footwear for any summer occasion, topping your outfit off with a traditional straw panama or a contemporary pair of sunglasses. For more casual occasions, look for lighter linen fabrics or relaxed chinos, paired with a lightweight blazer for when the sun disappears behind a cloud.
Gentlemen seeking a special summer outfit can take advantage of two new menswear outlets at The Oracle, with both Hugo Boss and Pretty Green choosing The Oracle for their first standalone stores in Berkshire. Fashion-forward menswear brand Pretty Green, which was founded by former Oasis front man Liam Gallagher, opened this April, with the store stocking a wide range of on-trend menswear, from the iconic parka to tailoring and casual denim. The current collection includes shirts in Pretty Green’s signature paisley print, ideal for summer evenings.
World-famous brand Hugo Boss will open at the centre later this summer. The new store will stock a wide range of men’s fashion and accessories from all of the brand’s ranges, the elegant BOSS core brand, denim line BOSS Orange and its younger and avant-garde label HUGO, with its innovative modern design.
