The Big Draw MK

The Big Draw MK

Mayor to launch event coordinated by The Drawing Machine at MK Gallery on Sunday, 30 September

Every October The Campaign for Drawing holds the worlds biggest celebration of drawing in its nationwide event The Big Draw. For the Big Draw 2012, the MK-based drawing specialists The Drawing Machine, are co-ordinating a month of inspiring events presented across multiple venues and organisations in Milton Keynes, including MK Gallery, Artworks-MK, thecentre:mk, Campbell Park, Inter-Action MK
and The Open University.

The Big Draw MK will be officially launched by the Mayor of Milton Keynes, Councillor Catriona Morris, at MK Gallery on Sunday, 30September at 2.30pm during an event called Making the First Mark. Open to all abilities and ages, there will be drawing activities available from 2-5pm, inspired by this years national Big Draw theme In Line.

Visitors will be asked Where will you Draw the Line? and options will include the wall, the floor and a drawing board. People will be invited to find lines in the environment and draw them into the urban landscape with a variety of materials, including tape and chalk. Milton Keynes greatest artist Neville Modley (aka Steve Groom) will also be on hand to offer a Drawing Masterclass, and in the spirit of the recent Olympics, participants will be invited to get involved in a Strike a Pose time trial, where they have to hold a modelling pose as long as possible, while someone else sketches them.

The Drawing Machine will also be using the occasion to launch their City of Trees Project, inviting people to draw on postcards and contribute to a collective twork that will build during the course of October with a final presentation in the form of a tree in Middleton Hall, thecentremk on 31October.

Almost 20 different events will take place during October, offering a variety of exciting drawing activities designed to encourage the inexperienced to try their hand at mark-making and the experienced to show off their creative skills. (See listings below).

The months programme concludes with Big Draw MK: The Grand Finale on Wednesday 31st October from 11am 5pm at Middleton Hall in thecentre:mk. Activities will be available for all the family, including: Make your own Drawing Machine, using scrap materials; draw The Never-ending story of Milton Keynes, which will be produced on an 20 metre piece of paper; The Bigger Picture where peoples outlines are traced on a massive sheet of paper, scene of crime style perfect for Halloween; City of Trees Project, putting postcard leaves back on a specially constructed tree made by Woodchuck Recycling. In addition, anyone who has made a drawing during October will have it exhibited and people can vote for their favourite drawing in the show.
