Join Steve Davison on a short walk in Buckinghamshire at Fingest

Fingest, tucked amongst the rolling Chiltern hills, is a beautiful village with picturesque cottages, a pub – the Chequers Inn – and an ancient church: St Bartholomew’s, with a rare twin-gabled, square Norman tower.

From the village the walk heads down to Skirmett – home to The Frog – before heading up through fields and woodland, passing Little Frieth to arrive at Fingest Wood and the Fieldfare Stile; the stile was erected in memory of Henry Bridges Fearon, who, as ‘Fieldfare’, brought the love of the English countryside to a multitude of happy pilgrims. From this high vantage point enjoy the views across Fingest to the 18th-century windmill which starred in the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (written by James Bond creator Ian Fleming), where it was the home of the eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts. From here it’s a short, but fairly steep, walk back to Fingest.

The walk

1 (SU777911) – Stand with your back to the Chequers Inn and turn left for 100m and then fork right along the Chiltern Way (enclosed path). Go through a gate and turn left down the road to a T-junction. Cross over and go through the small gate just right of the houses. Continue down through the fields, leave through a small gate at the bottom and continue straight on along the lane for 350m through Skirmett. Shortly before The Frog pub, turn left along a track and through a small gate. Follow the right-hand field boundary and leave through a gate. Turn left up the lane to the corner and fork right (straight on) up the bridleway.

2 (SU784896) – At Hatchet Wood bear left following the path alongside the fence (left) before leaving the trees and continuing across the field to a stile. Cross the lane and follow the enclosed path past Whitefield Cottage, later turn right through a gate and continue between the houses to reach a lane in Little Frieth. Turn left and keep straight on at the corner following the track for 400m. At Moussells Wood follow the track left to reach a gate at the far side of the trees. Keep ahead across the field and down through Fingest Wood. Cross Fieldfare Stile and follow the path down towards Fingest, crossing two stiles on the way. Turn left along the lane back to the Chequers Inn.
