Chiltern Way Walking Festival

Chiltern Way Walking Festival

This walking programme has been set up to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Chiltern Way andoffers a wide range of walks to

suit all abilities

Chiltern Way Walking Festival Programme - 2010

The Chiltern Way is a circular walking route of around 200 km (125 miles) and there are now three optional extensions taking the total route to a maximum of 278 km (172 miles). It is a wandering, varied and mostly rural way stretching around the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and passing through many pretty Chiltern villages.

These walks are open to the public all are welcome there is no charge

If you would like to walk the whole route, please note that Chiltern Society volunteers are leading a series of linear walks on Sundays between May and September which give you the opportunity to walk the whole of the original Chiltern Way and receive a certificate when you complete the final walk in September!

All walkers join the walks at their own risk and are advised to carry their own first aid kit, in addition please bring a packed lunch on longer walks as it is not always possible to plan a lunch break near a local pub! If you are planning to join a walk, it is helpful if you could phone the walk leader in advance so they have some idea of numbers. Please be aware there may be limited parking in some locations.

For the latest information about the walking festival and the work of the Chiltern Society please see our website www.chilternsociety.org.uk more walks are being added to this programme all the time so please see our website for the latest details

*Note on the Sunday linear walks lead by the Chiltern Society

We think that one reason why some people may be put off from walking the whole of the Chiltern Way is because public transport is impractical and the logistics of how to get back to your car when you have walked a section are quite difficult. With a solution to this in mind and to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Chiltern Way we invite you to join us to hike this attractive path in a special series of fourteen guided Sunday walks.

It is not necessary to be a member of The Chiltern Society to walk with the group. It is however essential that you agree to take part in the two car shuffle with other drivers, to get to and from the ends of the walk. The plan is for walkers to meet at 9.30 am at a car parking area located near to where the walk will end that day. The walk leader will then invite drivers and passengers to pair off into groups so that one or more cars can be left where the hike will finish and the other car or cars takes the group to where the days walk starts. After walking from there, at the end of the hike, drivers of the cars parked at the finish will return the rest of their groups to their vehicles.

The average days walk will be about ten miles and the longest one will be less than twelve. The leader will select occasional brief rest breaks and a stop for a picnic lunch, aiming to complete the walk around three or four oclock in the afternoon. Dont forget to bring drinks and food for these longer walks!

If you are looking for shorter walks in the Chilterns, the Simply Walks programme run by Buckinghamshire County Council will be of interest. See www.buckscc.gov.uk/simplywalk

The Chiltern Society would like to thank all the volunteers who have offered to lead walks for this walking festival, and we would also like to thank all the other organisations who have joined in; parish councils, local heritage groups and walking groups.
