The National Trust has launched its first walking festival, 22-30 October, to make the most of glorious autumn colour. Some are with rangers, some are way-marked trails, and there are even buggy-friendly routes for families. The National Trust has also created a series of new downloadable walks.

Basildon Park is hosting its own special event on 21 October to launch a series of new self-guided trails. Wellies at the Ready is an opportunity to enjoy an autumnal guided walk with the warden (10.30am in the Stableyard, no booking required). Alternatively visitors can pick up a map and follow any of four new way-marked trails exploring Basildons 18th-century parkland and woods. Guided walks also take place every Friday at 10.30am until 25 November. Basildon Park, near Reading, tel: 0118 984 3040, www.nationaltrust.org.uk/walkingfestival
