Heston Blumenthal on his new range of barbecues

Maureen McLean catches up with inspirational three Michelin starred chef, Heston Blumenthal OBE, at one of his pubs, The Crown at Bray
The temptation to give Heston a grilling is always there, particularly when he’s introducing us to his latest whizz – a new barbecue range. But as everything sizzles along nicely, Heston is reminiscing about The Fat Duck, the gourmet restaurant opposite his third Bray premises, The Hinds Head.
The Fat Duck used to be a pub known as the Bell or the Ringers. He recalls: “The building had more influence on me than any other thing or person. I’m self taught. When I started out I did 120 hours there a week. I would leave home at 5am and often wouldn’t return home until 2am the next morning!”
It certainly made me smile, sitting in the garden of the Crown. My memories include many an evening spent there and the Hinds Head when 20-something. I’d zoom into Bray in a soft top Triumph Spitfire and then head off to Studio Valbonne at Maidenhead. It’s good to see the Crown hasn’t changed a bit, other than the extensive food menu.
Heston’s passion for food is clearly running in the family. Son Jack is following in his footsteps, working in the Blumenthal Experimental Kitchen in Bray.
Meanwhile, Heston himself has been busy on his latest project. He’s collaborated with top Australian barbecue manufacturer, Shriro, to launch a new range, ‘Everdure by Heston Blumenthal’. Following a successful launch in Australia, the revolutionary and stylish range of barbecues has arrived in the UK, with Kettler GB Limited, as the official distributors.
Jointly tested and developed at Heston Blumenthal’s famous development kitchen in Bray, and Shriro’s research facilities, Heston embarked on a mission to create the perfect modern barbecue: “I wanted to bring some of the techniques and methods I have developed in over 20 years in the kitchen and bring them to the great outdoors,” he says.
“There is something wonderful about cooking together with friends around a barbecue. The smell, the sound, the flavour of the food filling the air just adds to the whole enjoyment.”
The charcoal range improves upon the entire cooking experience from the point of ignition. The HUB and FUSION charcoal barbecues use a clever fusion of electricity with an integrated heating element to ignite charcoal so it is ready to cook on in 10 minutes. Additional stand out features include an integrated rotisserie system and retractable power cord.
The charcoal range also includes the lightweight CUBE, a compact and versatile portable barbecue, ideal for camping, picnics and trips to the beach. At £149 it’s a perfect summer birthday present.
The gas range includes the three burner FURNACE, and the two burner FORCE models, both featuring high performance burners, large cooking areas, space saving drop-down servery and super-fast heat up.
