Meet Tony Lyles of Thatcham and long-suffering wife, Joanne. Tony was chosen in a Valentine’s Day competition run by Eden Shopping Centre in High Wycombe as the two counties’ most unromantic person for his unrivalled ability to misjudge a situation.

Joanne told Eden’s Love Squad that Tony ‘was on cloud nine’ when their daughter was born on Valentine’s Day in 2008. He couldn’t wait to phone friends and family to give them the good news. Unfortunately, he led with the line: “I’ll never need to bother with Valentine’s Day cards again as our daughter’s birthday is far more important.” True to his word, Joanne hasn’t has a whiff of a card or gift since.

But this year Tony has been sent home with a £400 gift card for Joanne, to be spent with House of Fraser’s personal stylist and she’ll be treated to a Kerastase ritual treatment and a cut and professional blow-dry at Rush High Wycombe, chocolates and a bottle of Champagne from M&S and a box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts. There was also reserved a table for two at Villagio Ristorante and seats to see a film of their choice at Cineworld.

Perhaps not surprisingly, entries were almost exclusively received from ladies. One more thing was absolutely clear from all the entries received – each and every one was still very much in love with the partner, despite their shortcomings.
