Christopher Cripps, a 23 year old butcher from Greens of Pangbourne, has a few family secrets when it comes to making some prize-winning bangers.
Hes just been crowned Southern Regional Champion of the BPEX Butcher Roadshow and Product Evaluation Events. His sausages wowed the judges in three categories, with a perfect Lamb, Rosemary and Garlic Sausage winning him the accolade. The shop entered 11 products, picking up awards for each, including nine golds and two silver awards, as well champion title.
Christopher said: I cant believe it. I was really delighted to get the three category titles, but the overall award was the cherry on the top. The lamb sausage is one weve been playing around with for a little while. It is a classic marriage of flavours that works so well we decided to put it forward for formal evaluation the results speak for themselves.
The Pork Originals Sausage is one of our traditional varieties and is made to a closely guarded recipe handed down to me by my grandfather, Royston Hine. This remains unchanged today and is a constant favourite with our customers.
The real surprise, however, came from the Beef and Stilton Sausage, entered into the Lamb or Beef Sausage category, as it was only the second time Id made it! Steak and Stilton are a great combination and we thought it might just work as a sausage.
All three varieties are now available in the shop. Meanwhile, Christopher is preparing for the Roadshow National Final in June, where seven regional champions will battle for the national title, as well as the prestigious Champion of Champions event in October.
