London Irish will be taking on Doncaster Knights at their annual St Patrick’s Party game on Saturday 23 March 2019 at the Madejski Stadium, Reading

We caught up with London Irish’s fly-half, Stephen Myler, who is third on the Premiership’s all-time list of point scorers with 1,697 points, having previously played for Northampton Saints. Hailing from a famous rugby league family, Myler began his playing career in the 13-aside game and made 49 Super League appearances for his hometown club Widnes Vikings. Myler signed for London Irish in the summer of 2018, and adds a wealth of experience to the Irish back line with his excellent kicking game coupled with an attacking flair.

This will be Myler’s first London Irish St Patrick’s Party game, which is a standalone fixture in the rugby diary, attended by supporters from all over Britain and Ireland. He says: “This will be my first St Patrick’s Party game as a London Irish player, so it’s one I’m excited to be a part of. The boys who have played in them before have said that the atmosphere is incredible so I’m looking forward to experiencing that. It’s an important home game for us and hopefully the game will provide as much entertainment on the pitch as there is off it!

“Our goals are to keep improving as a team, and hopefully that will help us to achieve our goal of getting back into the Premiership.”

He told us there are plenty of opportunities for young people to get involved in rugby these days, as interest in the sport continues to grow. “This is great to see,” he says. “And London Irish run a lot of rugby camps and programmes at schools and clubs throughout Berkshire.”

Of course, we can’t leave before asking how he thinks England will get on in the World Cup this year. “I think they’re definitely in with a strong chance,” he says. “The squad is full of quality players, and the strength in depth is also only a positive thing.”
