Magic of the makeover

We often sit and study those ‘makeover’ photos that seem to feature professional models (and sometimes think the subjects looked better before all the pampering) but what you are seeing here is genuine local ladies.

All have had the attention of hairdresser and make up artist Laura Hardie-Gleed of Earley near Reading, a bright spark who after 10 years of working in salons across East Berkshire decided to ‘go it alone’ with her own one-woman business.

Laura says: “I built up my business as a mobile hairdresser and then did a course to add make-up to the service. It’s grown phenomenally since then, right from the first bride. I really enjoy the transformations, but the feedback I get suggests the success is not just down to the results. I’m one of those people who stay really calm and chilled out while everyone else is flapping – brides and ladies preparing for big occasions seem to value that!”

You might wonder how a mother of two (Indie, four, Cruz, just two) manages to keep so calm but Laura admits she has magnificent support from husband Ian. This started right from their own wedding day, when he took Laura’s surname (Gleed) so that they both changed their names to the double-barrelled version. Now he’s become a stay at home father so that Laura can pursue her business dream.

Experts in the purest health products

Binfield Heath nutritionist Nicola Massey and hypnotherapist Elaine Marsh from Playhatch have linked up to launch Health on Your Doorstep, a website offering natural, ethical and organic products alongside a mine of information and health advice articles.

Between them they have some 30 years of experience in health and the healing arts. A chance meeting led to Nicola and Elaine deciding to pool their talents.

Nicola says: “Sometimes you just know when you meet someone new that it was meant to be. That’s how I felt when I met Elaine; it was a light bulb moment. “Somebody finally totally got what I was babbling on about and she was right on my doorstep. We have both been on our own health discoveries and trained in a diverse range of health and healing practices. Read and tried all manner of natural health and wellbeing products of one kind or another. I pretty much eat, sleep and breathe health, which most probably drives everyone nuts.”

Elaine’s path to a healthier lifestyle began some 20 years ago when she had a serious illness. She explains: “There is nothing quite like it to make you totally re-evaluate your life!”

Their aim is to take out the guesswork for people seeking products that can improve symptoms or boost their general health. They plan to expand with events and an online food market. See
